Frequently Asked Questions about Chimney Cleaning

Having your chimney cleaned at least once a year is recommended by the NFPA or the National Fire Protection Association. Particularly before the heating season begins. If you use your fireplace frequently or burn wood, you may need more frequent cleanings.

2. When is the best time of year to have my chimney cleaned?
Since your fireplace and chimney need to be cleaned when they are not in use, we recommend having them cleaned in the summer or early fall before you start to use them again. We can only clean/inspect chimneys that have not had a fire active for at least 24 hours.
3. Can I clean my chimney myself?
While some homeowners may attempt a DIY cleaning, it’s often safer and more effective to hire a professional. Professionals have the right tools and expertise to thoroughly clean and inspect your chimney for any potential hazards.
4. What is creosote, and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is a flammable, tar-like substance that forms when fuel is burned incompletely. It can accumulate in your chimney and pose a fire hazard if not removed regularly.
5. Is chimney cleaning messy?
While chimney cleaning can produce some soot and debris, professional services take precautions to minimize mess. We use a clean, fresh tarp for each house and special vacuums designed to contain and control dust and debris.
6. What should I do to prepare for a chimney cleaning?
You can help prepare by removing any furniture or items near the fireplace and ensuring that the area is accessible. You should not have a fire in the fireplace for at least 24 hours before our arrival. If a fireplace is still warm from your last fire, we must reschedule due to safety concerns.
7. Will cleaning my chimney improve fireplace efficiency?
Yes, a clean chimney allows for better airflow, which can enhance the efficiency of your fireplace. A clogged chimney can restrict airflow, making it more difficult to start and maintain a fire.
8. Can a dirty chimney affect my health?
Yes, a dirty chimney can lead to poor indoor air quality due to smoke and carbon monoxide buildup. Regular cleaning helps ensure that harmful gases are efficiently vented outside.
9. How long does a chimney cleaning take?
A professional chimney cleaning typically takes about an hour, depending on the condition of the chimney, the type of fireplace or stove, and the number of fireplaces or stoves in your house.
10. How can I reduce creosote buildup in my chimney?
Burning only seasoned, dry wood
